Chapter Four

“Come on, we have work to do, and you need a shower.” Alistair’s hand cracked playfully against my ass. I giggled and stretched. I didn’t know how long I’d slept, but damn if I didn’t feel good.

My body ached a little as I stood up. But it was a good ache and reminded me of what Death and I had done just a few hours before. A sly smile crossed my lips, and he snorted. “What?

“You look like the cat who got the cream.” He walked over to me and tipped my chin up to him. After kissing me gently, more so than I thought he was capable of, he pulled back and smirked. “Go get ready. I think I have this all figured out.”

I did as he asked.

Running the shower, I brushed my teeth then jumped into the warm spray and bathed myself. In record time, I was out and ready to figure out what my friend had figured out. However, when I walked into my kitchen and saw another man, three times as intimidating as Death, I faltered. He was bigger than Alastair, leaner though. His jet-black hair was perfectly quaffed, and his three-piece suit was worth probably more than I made in a year. His yellow-green eyes bore into me. I could feel him probing at my soul, and I was powerless to stop him.

“Uh…” I couldn’t form any words as I continued to stand there. And then, just as quickly as I felt the man inside me, he was gone. His hand extended toward the seat across from him. I wanted to laugh for a moment. I was in my house, and this person was inviting me to sit at my table.

“I came as quickly as I got Alastair’s request. He seems to believe you have been used as a pawn.” The man paused. I glanced up at Death and nodded with an audible gulp. “I tend to agree with him. But we have a problem.”

“I figured. I was ready to go with Death. You should know that. I wouldn’t fight it,” I answered, lifting my chin.

“I guessed as much when I looked at your soul.” He chuckled. “I don’t think that’ll be necessary though.”

“Oh?” I queried.

“Yes. You’ve bonded with my best reaper, Alastair. You are mates.” For the first time the oppressive air around the man lifted, and he was happy.

“I’m his what?” So much had happened in the last forty-eight hours. I couldn’t comprehend the words the man spoke. “Can we start over again, please?”

“Where are my manners?” The man held his hand out, and I took it. Dread filled me, along with fear and agony. I pulled back quickly and rubbed my hand, trying to wash away the icky feelings. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “I forget that humans can’t stand touching me.” For a moment he looked sad, and I actually felt bad for him.

“It’s okay. No harm done. Continue.” I gazed up at Alastair, hoping for a little reassurance. His face was impassive, showing no emotion.
